How to install SCSI / SATA drive without floppy drive

Have you ever installed windows in a PC with SCSI / SATA hardisk? If yes, You must’ve been experiencing trouble with having to press F6 in the beginning of windows installation to install the SCSI / SATA driver.

Finally that trouble comes to me yesterday 3 days ago, My office bought a new HP Proliant ML150 G3 Server, it comes with SATA Hardisk, 160GB.

At first I’m very sure that I can install Windows 2003 Server on that huge machine. but, yes.. when I install the OS, It said that I need to install the SCSI / SATA Driver first…

Ok.. no problem I’ve got the Driver CD that comes with the package. *so naive lah.. hehe*. But at that moment I realized that windows needs floppy disk to install SCSI / SATA Driver. CRAP :((!

Why’d I say Crap? because.. the server comes without any floppy drive. I open the PC Case, search for a possible cable power for floppy… Dang.. not found.. Search for any data cable for floppy.. not found either :((. It means I can’t use floppy disk from other PC.

My partner here tells me to use SmartStart CD for HP Server. He said that you can use that CD to install the SCSI / SATA Driver first before installing Windows.

So.. I search for SmartStart for HP Proliant ML150 G3 Server.
I search here and there , try the official homepage of the product. nothing found :(

Finally and desperately I call HP for an assistance. After redirected here and there.. finally I speak to someone *i think he’s malaysian* there. I tell him about my problems. and he give me a ticket number, tells me to wait for his call in a moment.

After lunch, I got a phone call from HP, I heard a woman voice introducing herself as HP representatives. she give me the “not helping at all” answer, which was HP Proliant ML150 G3 is not supported by SmartStart CD and the solution for my problem is to buy a HP External Floppy drive. She said it must be HP Product, no other :)).

Her answer made me more desperate. My partner already told me to ask the management to buy the external floppy drive. but I didn’t agree. I’m sure there’s other way for it.

And yay! \:D/ after asking at PC Plus mailing list, I’ve got so many helpful responses, (thank’s to mr M-Kurniawan) They said that you can embed the SCSI / SATA Driver to the Windows OS Installation CD.

You can use nLite to add the driver into Windows Installation CD. This is a program that can add drivers, program and so many more thing. And the best of all, it’s free.2 thumbs up for the software. :D

What you should do are:
- run the nLite,
- copy the content of Windows Installation CD,
- add the SCSI / SATA Driver
- make it a bootable disc
- burn the re-compiled Windows CD
- install the windows like usual with your newly created CD

anddd voilaaaaa… the windows setup can be run without pressing F6 to install SCSI / SATA driver. \:D/ so happy to see the setup runs smoothly.. hohoho…

No need External Floppy Drive.. HP Solution su*ks! hope this post helps you if you have trouble like this :)

This is An Motorcycle Should It Be?

This is a very confusing topic and HP does not help much. I have this server with (1) SATA drive. After researching this and reading this article I tried the N-Lite software with slipstreamed drivers. It still did not see the (1) drive. I read further into the documentation with the HP Server and found this * NOTE:

Servers with 11/03/2006 BIOS or later by Default have AHCI enabled and support more than 4 HDD’s. Installing and OS in this mode requires the AHCI or RAID driver (see Step 5). Is using the OS Default driver and not supporting more than 4 HDDs is desired, then do steps 1-4, except DISABLE AHCI and RAID in step 3.

    1. Go to BIOS Setup Utilitiy by pressing F10 during POST.
    2. Go to ADVANCED tab and choose Advanced Chipset Configuration.
    3. Enable SATA AHCI Enable mode. (DISABLE this setting if only using 1 drive!!) That is what f*cked me up and I could never see the drive when trying to install W2K server.
    4. Press F10, Save and Reboot.

Wah ternyata cuma gitu yah!.
